Twitter

As Twitter popularity has increase, in the same manner the manner in which a business can use it has progress accordingly.  For any given company, Twitter has the potential to increase the level of customer service that they offered. On this site, management has the ability to get instant feedback about the products and services, and the ways people - the user - identify themselves with the brand.

Twitter has become more than a site where each individual can voice their opinion about any subject. It is also a way to embrace the constant changes that occur in our daily lives. For example, in Mexico Twitter has become more than a way of communication; it is a necessity. As explained in the article "Mexico Turns to Social Media for Information and Survival" published on the New York Times, written by Damien Cave, Mexicans are twitting about the places to avoid when there has been a violent attack. The article goes into detail of how now in Mexico, a well know country for is violence, people are already aware of crime scenes even before the police reaches the location.

I personally think that if Government can benefit as well from Twitter and in consequence the whole society will benefit. If Mexican authorities would pay close attention of what are the people saying, some crimes can even be prevented.

Linkedin

Linkedin is by far the most used job search research site available in this time of recession. This site has given the regular person have access to the CEO of any given company that he or she might want to work for. In addition, the Linkedin site is not only being used by people who are searching for jobs. Recently, President Obama participated in a town hall which involved answering questions posted by member of the Linkedin community. A detailed blog titled "Obama and ‘Young Guns’ Make Silicon Valley Pitches" was published on the New York Times, written by Jennifer Preston and Sarah Wheaton. The blog appeared on the Politic section of the newspaper.

The following is the link to the article:

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/26/obama-and-young-guns-make-silicon-valley-pitches/?scp=3&sq=linkedin&st=cse

Linkedin not only has created a new benchmark for networking, it also is a business in the process of making profits. The company had a Initial Public Offering of $45.00 on the New York Stock Exchange. For a new company, this very high IPO, in my opinion is setting out a sign of the power that the company has and it will keep increasing in the future.

Around the house {Installed Birthday presents}

Here is the mammoth size Photograph installed in our lounge room
+ My Birthday present from the Mr {Ceramic Drum Stool}
Yes somebody ME might have asked for "said Stool" in an anonymous (or not so) email link, or excitedly pointed out of the bus window the shop near us that had one in the window, whilst proceeding to tell him the exact price and quantity they had on hand.

+ I Used the birthday money from the In Laws to purchase these flying ducks. Maybe it is a sign of my maturity but both my Mother and Mother In Law have flying ducks around their homes.
+ Hopefully this week I will purchase a new camera with some of the Birthday money from my parents.

Cops and cameras----Modern peeping toms?

The Star Tribune had a story today about the Minneapolis Police Department purchasing several roll-em cameras on poles which can be placed conveniently in areas throughout the city.  What the article failed to discuss is the right to privacy and anonymity in a public place.

The article states there is no law that bans or regulates recording in public places.  I take it meaning a city ordinance or state law.  In that respect, the reporter is right, but should there not be.

I believe there is a right to privacy in a public place.  This means there is behavior and actions that should be respected by government as a zone of privacy when it uses camera surveillance.  An example of that behavior or action are as follows as stated by Robert Ellis Smith, Publisher of Privacy Journal.

What's 'Public' Can Be Private

"There are many activities in public that are entitled to privacy protection, according to the clear implications of previous federal court holdings in the U.S. These include: going to and from a house of worship, an abortion clinic, or a medical facility; holding hands or embracing affectionately in public; participating in a political demonstration or wearing political symbols; reading a book or a magazine; mediating or praying, and perhaps chatting on a cell phone in a way that is audible nearby. The right to vote in the U.S. and Canada may be interpreted to prohibit videotaping citizens as they visit a polling place."

Cameras have been a part of our lives for decades.  We would see occasionally 25 years ago a camera at the bank, maybe at a "secure" area, but not as prevalent as today. The Target Corporation gift of surveillance cameras in downtown Minneapolis to the multiple cameras used by the St Paul police left over from the National GOP Convention in 2008, our law enforcement agencies have their cameras rolling and recording.  This does even include the feed that some agencies may have connected from private cameras.

Technology is changing the dynamics of how law enforcement does its business, but at what cost to our liberty and privacy interests?  I do not oppose technology being used to keep us safe, but I believe it is important though for law enforcement to be accountable, transparent, and open as to what the new "toys" do.

There can and should be public discussion of the who, what, where, when, why, and how of this kind of  public surveillance.

What are the safeguards for specific tracking of individuals and cars?  About the use of the "zoom" or magnification on subjects of those powerful cameras?  Because of the sophistication of the video cameras featured in the story or used now by the various police departments and sheriffs, How does facial recognition technology play into the video surveillance system?  Are the cameras tuned up with behavioral recognition software as the University of Minnesota has done?  Do they have audio recording possibilities?  Are there audits?

Do public entities have the policies, rules, or laws that should govern these kind of surveillance systems that are improving daily as technology gets better?

We need to recognize our privacy/self-autonomy liberty and interests so that there is not "an imbalance of power between the government as "watcher" and the citizens as "subject".

(Quoted part of last paragraph is from Melissa Ngo, Senior Counsel of EPIC
in comments submitted to the Department of Homeland Security in 2008)

Things Which You have to Remember While buying a Security Fire Alarm or a CCTV IP Camera System - CCTV Wireless IP Camras Kerala,Fire Alarms Kerala,Fire Control Panels Cochin

A good Wireless CCTV IP Camera System should deter criminals, protect you when you're home, alert you to events, and provide rock solid evidence should something happen. When you are trying for an efficient Security System at your Home Fire Control Panels with Automatic Fire Alarms and Network IP Cameras with Analog CCTV Wireless System is very essential for Security point of View. Which are playing very important part in monitoring of your Assets and Wealth. Probably worst disasters, that could even strike as a Fire. A Fire Control Panel with a Smoke Detector does the job of preventing Fire Hazard or it can even extinguish your Fire occurrence automatically.
Once the smoke from a fire rises up within the detectors range it will automatically trigger an alarm that notifies both people inhabiting the building and the local fire department. Smoke detectors are becoming as common as fire alarms some are even installed in residential areas.

While buying a CCTV IP Camera, you should be careful about its remote Viewing Capacity, Bandwidth, Expandability and the Capacity to view over higher ranges of Application. There are more Advantages with a Network Surveillance System over an Analog Surveillance System, so you can make an educated decision before you purchase a new CCTV Camera System. Wireless IP Cameras are more expensive than ordinary CCTV Camera System. Wireless IP Cameras are a higher Security providing System. Log on to : http://www.visiontux.in/cctv.html

Fire Alarms with Smoke Detectors are usually installed near th exit points so people who want to turn them on can do so on their way out. The Fire Alarm Control Panels are usually found coupled with fire extinguishers to help people kill the fire or keep it at bay as they exit the establishment. Hidden CCTV Cameras provide the opportunity for business owners and managers as well as law enforcement officers to keep a discrete but watchful eye on what is happening. Fire Alarms or Smoke Detectors are Home Security Devices for Protection of your Life and Assets. Fires can be caused by many things. Faulty electrical equipment or even an exposed or UN-insulated wire could cause a spark that could easily start a fire provided it is near anything flammable. This is why people are advised to switch of electrical equipment when not in use, to prevent any unwanted accidents especially if there are no people in the same room. Some fires are even caused by simple carelessness, like a cigarette that fell from an ashtray straight to the carpet or the bed or maybe a gas stove left open. Google Docs

Before this class I had not been exposed to Google docs. Although I had read about the usefulness employees found when collaborating on a project. Now that I have used it, it seems Google docs is not a practical as Microsoft Software. Perhaps, because we are all creature of habits, I still have not adapted completely to Google docs.
In the process of getting acquainted with the program that Google has, I found that there are many websites that offer the same capabilities and features as Microsoft and Google when it comes to creating documents. What differentiates one company from the other is the amount of users it has.
Openoffice.Org powered by Oracle has a strong presence in the market for office software. However, it has not reached the level that Microsoft and Google have.

I think that a business can benefit from all three software mentioned above, as long as employees are fully aware of all the features each office product has.

Blogs

I have to admit, the idea of blogging did not seem very exciting to me; until I found myself reading blogs on the New York Times website and also from a newspaper in Dominican Republic. I gradually started to read blogs on products I use or I intended to buy. The latter was the defining step for me to become a blogger. At first I could not imagine how people just wanted to write about their experiences and publish it online. Last winter, my car broke down and I needed to buy another car. So what did I do? I went online and read what people were saying about the reliability, features, and price of the car I had in mind to buy. The different car makers website I visited did not steer me towards buying the product. What actually got me interested in a given model and make was the opinion of thousands of users on the online community.
Given the experience I have, I strongly believe that a blog is one of the most useful tools a company's website can have. The blog will give insight of what are the customers looking for. In addition, it will create the starting point of creating new products and services.

Skype & Facebook

Without a doubt Skype and Facebook are two of the most inexpensive tools a company can use to be in touch with its customers.
Skype has indeed lower the operating cost for those industries that require employees to do business far away from their company location. As it is well known, with Skype key people do not have to travel for days and incur in hotel, flight and accommodation costs. Training is also an area where companies incur big costs. I believe that Skype can be useful for long and theoretical training within a large company. Instead of having an expert in the subject come the company's location. The company can arrange a video-chat and possibly get the training done in less time and have the employees apply the new knowledge immediately.

Skype and Facebook have become so important in our daily life due to the fact that the service is free. Although, one can pay for certain features on Skype, is not something that will greatly enhance the communication process.
Facebook is useful to target millions and millions of current customers and potential customers to a company's product. However, this does not hold true for all industries and for all products. For example, the food industry: is very easy to follow big food chains such as the Cheesecake Factory. After joining, one will get the latest updates and even discounts. In contrast, a mom and pop's pizzeria CAN have a Facebook page and offer many discounts and even freebies every now and then. The main difference between the two is that if this pizzeria has only one location in Montclair, NJ and I live in Trenton, NJ. most likely I will not be a follower. In other words, Facebook although can do wonderful things to improve sales it does not work for all business.

Monitor or surveillance in Minnesota licensed facilities?

The Star Tribune article called "Granny Cams" which appeared yesterday caught my attention.  It is the constant conflict with technology and privacy that is the heart of the story.  Cameras that are designed so small to be used to prevent harm to others who are vulnerable.  Sounds like a good idea.  It is not so easy to implement though.

As Roberta Opheim, State Ombudsman for mental health and developmental disabilities recognized by her statement in the story, individuals who are vulnerable have liberty and privacy interests. There must be recognition of self autonomy.

Do not be in the rush to fancy all nursing homes, foster care places, and other licensed facilities with the latest equipment to monitor the employees and the people who live in them, particularly in their "living space" or their home without thorough public discussion.

In 2007, when authorizing language was done for the limited purposes of the foster care homes who did not want an employee for overnight purposes it was done in a very not public way.  There were amendments to the authorizing language in 2009 (245A .11 sub 7a Article 1--Section 4) which can give a framework for the Legislature to guide itself and the State if we wish to expand the use of technology to monitor or do surveillance

I would prefer "monitor" then "surveillance."  The actions, intentions, and purposes are quite different from each other..

Overall Protecting yourself or your business from the risk of fire is critical for your Peace of Mind and feeling of Safety. The most fundamental way to meet your Family Safety is to own some sort of Residential Fire Alarm System. Smoke Detectors are a small alarm that's mounted on the ceiling. Every Home must have a Smoke Detector. It is a good idea for every home to have one or more Fire Extinguishers within easy reach. That way, when the fire alarm does go off, quick action may prevent a small, contained fire from becoming a large destructive one. As your Business demands an early detection System all Commercial properties need a Reliable Fire Alarm with Fire Suppression System. A Fire Suppression System ensures you Safety and Prevention from Damage.

E-mail to School Board Chair deep 6 supt finalist?

There are many times when public bodies interview people for positions for a city, county, or school district.  The positions can be for city coordinators/managers, superintendents, or even members for a commission of a public body or even the public body itself.

Recently, the Stillwater School District hired a new superintendent. An off shoot event with hiring of the superintendent ended with the Minnesota Commissioner of Administration.

The Stillwater School District asked the Commissioner for an opinion on a data practices issue.

One of the finalist's of the Superintendent search who did not get the position had knowledge that an e-mail was sent by an individual which he was the subject of. The e-mail was sent to the Board Chair.  The not successful candidate asked to inspect the e-mail.   This is the essence of the Commissioner's opinion.

When a job opening happens particularly a high profile position there are people who may want to comment on the job hunters.  Specially, if they think the person is not up to par for the job.  In those situations a party may communicate verbally.  E-mail is quite a different story.  When the Board Chair received that e-mail it became "government data" subject to the Data Practices Act.

It is human behavior, in general, if you do not get the job as Superintendent of a school district or any position you try to get an understanding why.

Was there something in the e-mail communication that could have had an impact on this person's candidacy?

The superintendent finalist may never know. The Commissioner ruled that the e-mail is correspondence between an elected official and an individual.  Even though the superintendent candidate was the subject.

The Commissioner based this on that the Board Chair did not share the e-mail with any person.  The School District in its request for an opinion stated, " The Board Chair did not disclose the email to any other board member, nor did he share it with School District administrators or employees. …"  The law in question is 13.601, subdivision 2.

Did the Board Chair share the contents verbally with others?  In interaction with other board members was there any verbal or written communication about any contents of the e-mail?  Does the Commissioner's opinion deal with the issue when verbal or written comments based on the e-mail are shared?

The opinion takes the position the e-mail communication as a whole is private as long as it is between an elected official and an individual. Should this be?

If you are a candidate for a position with the government and a subject of a memo, an e-mail, or something similar should you be able to access the government data about you if the communication was sent by an individual to an elected official and not shared physically?

Was the Superintendent finalist deep-sixed?

NOTE****Elected officials do not include judges or legislators who are not under the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act

Travel {Hunter Valley Weekend}

I have a little birthday coming up this weekend, just a little blip birthday really nothing to fuss about. Last weekend the girls and I headed to our Farm in the Hunter Valley for a little R & R on the third annual "Frolicking in the Vineyards tour".

The weekend Started with an amazing Lunch at The Veranda Restaurant at Calais Estate Palmers Lane Pokolbin, a lovely Tapas Style restaurant and we managed to eat ourselves silly with:
  • Slow roasted Lamb shoulder with Kipfler potato and green olive
  • Sydney rock” trio oyster taster plate; tempura with wasabi aioli, Virgin Mary and soy mirin
  • Pan seared haloumi with rhubarb, orange and cinnamon compote
  • Porcini and wild mushroom arancini
  • Thai style blue swimmer crab and prawn cakes with nam jim dipping sauce
  • Chicken ballontine of sage and pistachio nuts with glazed eschallot
  • Jamon with panko crusted duck egg, truffle oil and pecorino (served with Apera)
  • Slow braised Asian style pork belly with celeriac puree
Followed by the fluffiest Chocolate Souffle ever for desert (They have 4 different flavours)

After lunch the sunshine was so beautiful so we had a little walk around followed by the obligatory stop at the Hunter Valley Cheese Co to pick up some Branxton Brie. We then headed back to the farm for a dusk walk to see the cows (The farm is an operational black Angus farm).

Dinner was an amazing cheese plate, Sam Sam Cocktails and wine (or bottles of Yum as Ricki likes to say), the cheese plate had every type of cheese you could think of including macerated figs (A must try with any soft cheese if you can find them). My sister bought this cake:

Sunday morning after we headed to Resturant Cuvve at Peterson house for a campaign (Sparkling wine to be politically correct) breakfast:

The girls! Ricki, me, Christine and Jess

Super excited on the count down to our trip next year!
